South Bay: Local Travel Network

May. 21 2021 News By E3 Vehicles

Southern California . . . Are you ready for more golf carts on the road? Are you ready for an official lane dedicated to low-speed vehicles? Imagine a widened bike lane, you'll see electric bikes, golf carts, one-wheels and more.

We are thrilled to read and support the April 30, 2021 “Route Refinement Study for A South Bay Local Travel Network.”  Our goal is to raise awareness of the new study and to spark the conversation with community members. We will quickly summarize a few points of the study in this article but we highly encourage you to visit the story maps website.

Are New Roadways Being Mapped for Safe Micromobility?

Thanks to a number of great leaders in the South Bay, Southern California community who are truly passionate about a clean /green future - creating new safe routes could be in The South Bay's Futre. The South Bay Cities Council of Governments, has developed a case for a “South Bay: Local Travel Network.” (two-year study identified a network of slow-speed, low-stress streets that, with relatively low-cost street treatments, could be improved to accommodate the safe use for the growing market of personal zero-emission micro mobility modes.)

What is Micromobility?

/ˌmīkrōˌmōˈbilədē/

According to: “A Local Travel Network for The South Bay” Micromobility refers to a range of small, lightweight vehicles operating at slow speeds, most often used for short trips. They are either human-powered or electric, which means they are always zero-emission.

The Study, focusing on micro mobility discusses new and modern modes of transportation such as:

  • Bicycles

  • E-Scooters

  • E-Bikes

  • Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV’s)

  • Monoboards (OneWheel) and Other Personal Devices

Why should we care about this study?

First off, we hope this study promotes the LSN “Low-Speed Network” here in Southern California and sparks a larger conversation in the local communities you may be reading from!

Our streets inside the South Bay are clogged with a mix of local traffic and through traffic.  According to the SBCCG’s report:

“Most of us depend on a car to get to our places of work or school, shopping, recreation, and other destinations in and around our region. In fact, there are nearly 750,000 registered motor vehicles in the South Bay, driving on more than 2,000 miles of surface streets.

Most of our trips are short trips - 70% of car trips in the South Bay average 3 miles or less.”

E3 Vehicles and Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV’s)

As defined by SBCCG, “NEVs are street-legal golf carts. NEVs are available in 2, 4, and 6+ seat configurations. With a top speed of 25mph, they can be driven on any street with a speed limit 35mph or less. They are especially popular in the beach cities of the South Bay.”

Although there are many forms of micro mobility, E3 Vehicles, specializes in Street Legal Golf Carts also known as Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV’s) and Low-Speed Vehicles (LSV’s).

What makes a golf cart street legal?
